It is estimated that 12 in every 1000 (1.2 %) of the UK population suffer from some type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This figure could be higher as many people with the condition either do not seek help or are unaware that they have it.
Some unwanted habits and obsessions, if untreated, can develop into OCD.
Most clients do not come to see me for OCD, instead they will ask for help with other presenting problems such as; anxiety, stress, lack of confidence, shyness or low self-esteem and I will learn of their OCD from the question on the consultation form.
Often the OCD automatically subsides through the treatment for stress or anxiety etc. If this does not happen, then a more direct approach is needed towards identifying the cause of the OCD and resolving it.
Because I use a number of therapies, including psychotherapy, analytical hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), emotional freedom techniques (EFT) and mindfulness, it enables me to treat each client suffering from OCD, as an individual, with their own individual experiences and needs.
Different types of the OCD:
Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorders:
Sufferers of OCD develop the ritual as a way of relieving their anxiety, however, this relief is short lived and the ritual can become a source of anxiety in itself.
There are studies which demonstrate that a large number of OCD sufferers have experienced a trauma(s) prior to them developing the ritual. This trauma could have first taken place months or years before any symptoms were displayed.
Research also shows that someone suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has a 30 percent chance of developing OCD within a year.
