Studies have shown that the subconscious mind is in control 90% of the time and the conscious mind only 10%. This explains why we will still do something that we know consciously is not in our best interest and why we sometimes refrain from doing something that would benefit us.
All of our thoughts, behaviour and beliefs are guided by our subconscious mind. It is there that the root cause can be found for many of our problems and where positive change can begin.
Your conscious mind is responsible for; short-term memory, logical thinking, critical thinking and willpower.
Your subconscious mind is responsible; for your beliefs, habits, emotions, values, defensive reactions, long-term memory, imagination and instincts.
Your subconscious mind continuously communicates with your conscious mind and determines how you view yourself, others around you and the world in general. These communications are filtered through your beliefs and habits, feelings, imagination, sensations, dreams and emotions.
To your subconscious mind, everything either is or is not, everything is very black or white and nothing in-between. It is without reason or logic but is instinctive and reactive.
One of the important objectives of the subconscious mind is our survival but it can make mistakes about what is an actual threat to us. These mistakes can often be the cause of symptoms such as phobias, anxiety, OCD, IBS and many more.
Because your subconscious mind only communicates with you via feelings, it does not give you the opportunity to reason your way through what it is doing. Although, you may try to use conscious reasoning to overcome your subconscious reactions, you will find that conscious reasoning rarely wins the battle.
An example of this would be a very common phobia, that of arachnophobia the extreme fear of spiders. Even though consciously, the person suffering from arachnophobia knows that spider in the doorway cannot and would not even try to stop them from leaving the room, they remain petrified of approaching the doorway.
Analytical hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), emotional freedom techniques (EFT) and mindfulness are all powerful therapies that work with your subconscious mind.
Through them it is possible to locate the memories and events that are linked to your symptoms(s) and help you to let go of the attached negative emotions and break the link.
These therapies also retrain and update your subconscious mind to adopt more positive beliefs, emotions and habits, helping to relieve you of symptoms such as low self-esteem, depression, unhealthy eating habits, lack of self-confidence fears and phobias and much more.
